Passage Three-|||-Joy:A Sabject Schools Lack-|||-Becoming chicetted should not require giving up pleasure.-|||-A) When Jonathan Swift proposed, in 1729,that the people of Ireland eat their children,he insisted it-|||-would solve three problems at once;feed the hungry masses, reduce the population during a sever-|||-depression, and stimslate the restaurant busincss Even as a satire (该射),it secms dispasting and-|||-shocking in America with its child centered culture. But actually, the country is closer to his proposal-|||-than you might think.-|||-B)If you spend much time with cducators and policy makers, you`ll hear a lot of the following words:-|||-"tandarlk""roulh,""dilk,"ootme,"accoungutily,"and on.I have visited some of-|||-the newer supposedly "effective"schools, where children shout slogans in order to learn self-control or-|||-must stand behind their desk when they can`t sit still.-|||-C)A look at what goes on in most classrooms these days makes it abundantly clear that when people think-|||-about edacation, they are not thinking about what it feels like to be a child,or what makes childhood-|||-an important and valuable stage of life in its own right.-|||-D)I`m a mother of three,a teacher, and a drelopmestal portholight.I`ve watched a lot ol-|||-children-takling,playing,arpuing, eating, studying and being young. Here`s what I`ve come to-|||-understand. The thing that sets children apart from adalts is not their ignorance, nor their lack of-|||-skills. It`s their normous capacity for joy.Think of a 3 -year-old lost in the pleasures of finding out-|||-what he can and cannot sink in the bathtub,a 5-year-old beside herself with the thrill of putting-|||-together strings of aonsensical words with her best friends,or an 11-year-old completcly absorbed in a-|||-fascinating comic strip.A child`s ability to become deeply absorbed in something.and derive intense-|||-pleasure from that absorption,is something a spend the rest of their lives trying to return to.-|||-EA friend told me the following story. One day, when he went to get his 7-year old son from soccer-|||-practice, his kid greeted him with a downcast face and a sad voice. The couch had criticized him for-|||-not focusing on his soccer drills. The little boy walked out of the school with his head and shoulders-|||-hanging down.He seemed wrapped in sadness. But just before he reached the car door,he suddenly-|||-stopped,crouching(嗨伏)down to peer at something on the sidewalk. His face went down lower and-|||-lower, and then, with complete joy he called out,"Dad.Come here. This is the strangest bug I`ve-|||-ever seen. It has, like, a million legs. Look at this. It`s amazing."He looked up at his father,his-|||-features overflowing with energy and delight."Can`t we stay here for just m ninute? I want to find out-|||-what he does with all those legs. This is the coolest ever."-|||-F)The traditional view of such moments is that they constitute a charming but irrelevant byproduct of-|||-youth-something to be pushed aside to make room for more important qualiter, liec perowones-|||-神不懈),obligation,and practicality. Yet moments like this one are just the kind of intense-|||-absorption and pleasure adults spend the rest of their lives sccking. Human lives are governed by the-|||-desire to experience joy.Becoming cdacated should not require giving up joy but rather lead to finding-|||-joy in new kinds of thingsi reading novels instead of playing with small fipures, condacting-|||-experiments instcad of sinking cups in the bathtub, and debating serious issucs rather than stringing-|||-together notsense words, for example. In some cases, schools should help children find new,more-|||-grown-up ways of doing the same things that are constant sources of joy;making art, making friends,-|||-making decisions.-|||-G) Building on a child`s ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, wouldn`t be that hard. It would-|||-just require a shift in the education world`s minbet(思维)式),Iastead of trying to get children to-|||-work hard, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaninghul, prodative art like-|||-making things, working with others, exploring ideas, and solving problems? These focuses are not so-|||-different from the things in which they delight.-|||-H)Before you brush this argument aside as rubbish,or think of joy as an unaffordable havy in a nation-|||-where there is awful poverty, low academic achicecent, and high dropout rates, think again. The-|||-more horrible the school circumstances, the more important plcasure is to achieving any cducational-|||-success.-|||-D Many of the assignments and rules teachers come up with, often because they are pressured by their-|||-administrators, treat p&a and joy as the enemies of compcterceand reporsingly The assumption-|||-is that children shouldn`chat in the classroom because it hinders hard work; instead, they should learn-|||-to delay gotification(诀乐)so that they can pursue abstract goals, like going to college.-|||-J)Not only is this a boring and awful way to treat children, it makes no sense cducationally.Decades of-|||-rescarch have shown that in order to acquire skills and real knowledge in school, kids need to want to-|||-learn. You can force a child to stay in his or her scat, fill out a worksheet,or practice division.But-|||-you can`t force the child to think carefally, cnjoy books, digest complex information,or devclop a-|||-taste for learning. To make that happen, you have to help the child find pleasure in learning to sce-|||-school as a source of joy,-|||-K)Adults tend to talk about learning as if it were medicine;unpleasant, but necessary and good for you.-|||-Why not instead think of learning as if i were food something so valuable to humans that they have-|||-evolved to esperience it as a pleasure?-|||-L)Joy should not be trained out of children or left for after-school programs. Th more difficult a child`s-|||-life circumstances, the more important it is for that child to find joy in his or her classroom-|||-cos (20)^circ not a dirty word. And it doesn`t run counter to the goals of public education. It is,in-|||-fact,the precondition-|||-36.It will not be difficult to make learning a source of joy if cducators change their way of thinking.-|||-37.What distingusinhes child from adults is their strong ability to derive joy from what they are doing.-|||-38.Children in America are being treated with shocking cruclty.-|||-39.It is human aature to seek joy in life.-|||-40.Grown-ups are likely to think that learning to children is what medicine is to patients.-|||-41.Bad school conditions make it all the more important to turn learning into a joyful experience-|||-42.Adults do not consider chiltren`s fecli when it comes to education-|||-43.Admistrators seem to believe that only hard work will lead children to their educational goals.-|||-44.In the so-called "dfective"schools, childre are taught self control under a sct of strict rules.-|||-45.To make learning effective, councators hav to ensure that children want to learn.

The well was only eight inches across and a rock always covered it. But children had moved the rock. When Jessica fell, she fell right into the well.Jessica’s mother reached inside the well, but she couldn’t feel Jessica. She dialed 911 for help. Men from the fire department arrived. They discovered that Jessica was about 20 feet down in the well. For the next hour the men talked and planned Jessica’s rescue.“We can’t go down into the well,” they said.“It’s too narrow. Using a computer or a pen and paper to record information, however, can be a burden and cause some people to give up.Duke University researchers said using text messages to track eating and exercise habits can save time, and increase the chances that people will stick with their weight-loss rules. The study included 26 obese women with an average age of 38. The women used daily texting as part of their weight-loss program. The text messages focused on tracking personalized goals, such as avoiding sugary drinks or walking 10,000 steps a day. Messages also provided brief feedback (回复) and tips.Every morning, the women received a text from an automated(自动的)system that said, “Please text yesterday’s personal information of steps you walked and how many sugary drinks you had.” Based on the women's responses to the text message, the system sent another text with personalized feedback and tips. After six months, the women who used daily texting lost an average of nearly 3 pounds, while another group of women who used traditional methods to keep food and exercise diaries gained an average of 2.5 pounds, according to the study, which was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.“Text messaging has become popular and may be an effective method to simplify tracking of diet and exercise behavior,” Dori Steinberg, who was responsible for this research, said.Steinberg said, "Text messaging offers several advantages compared to other self-monitoring methods. Unlike web-based diet and exercise diaries, data in a text message can be entered quickly on nearly all cellphone platforms so it is very convenient to receive feedback. Besides, because of the limited number of words used in text messages, it saves time.”28. According to the study, traditional methods _________.A. are easier for people to lose weightB. may cause people to give up losing weightC. provide brief feedback and tipsD. are easy to track diet and exercise behavior29. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words. The key to their success: 20 tablet computers(平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group called One Laptop Per Child. The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing(分析) the project data say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program. The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia. With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,” said Keller. The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.32. How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village?A. It trains teachers for them.B. It contributes to their self-study.C. It helps raise their living standards.D. It provides money for building schools.33. What can we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3?A. They need more time to analyze data.B. More children are needed for the research.C. He is confident about the future of the project.D. The research should be carried out in kindergartens.34. It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could _______.A. learn English words quickly.B. draw pictures of animals.C. write letters to researchers.D. make phone calls to his friends.35. What is the aim of the project?A. To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.B. To make Amharic widely used in the world.C. To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.D. To help Ethiopians in learning their first language.

I am an American. I believe that the American presidency is the most important job in the world. It's a job that goes up for grabs (争夺) every four years. The candidate (候选人) who wins in November of 2000 will take office the following January and be the first new U.S. president of the twenty-first century. The election campaign (运动) is a long one. Some say it begins right after the election and goes on for the next four years. That's probably untrue, but it does last a long time. Those who have their eyes on the job have to start gathering support and building campaign organizations early. Some believe that the campaign for president should be shorter. I disagree. A long campaign is an endurance contest. It gives the candidates a chance to show their strengths and forces them to overcome their weaknesses. The close examination makes it much less likely that the voters (选民们) will accidentally choose an unqualified candidate to be their leader.Personally, I enjoy the contest. It's a long-distance race that produces a winner who may have a profound effect on all our lives. The debates and November election are the sporting events that really matter!25. The word "matter" in the last sentence of the article means "________".A. are unimportantB. are very importantC. are useful materialsD. are meaningless

({B)}7 Health Problems for the Modern Age({/B)} Modern life, with its emphasis on information, automation, computerization, and globalization, has made work easier and given us more leisure options, but we now have a whole host of new health problems. Only time will tell if these modern health problems disappear like 8-track tapes and rotary phones. Until then, here are some of the new maladies we have in store for us.({B)}Computer Vision Syndrome({/B)}If you spend all day staring at a computer screen, you may be at risk for computer vision syndrome (CVS), also called occupational asthenopia(弱视的). CVS encompasses all eye or vision-related problems suffered by people who spend a lot of time on computers. According to the American Optometric Association, symptoms of CVS include headaches; dry, red, or burning eyes; blurred or double vision; trouble focusing; difficulty distinguishing colors; sensitivity to light; end even pain in the neck or back. As many as 75 percent of computer users have symptoms of CVS due to glare, poor lighting, and improper workstation setup. To overcome CVS, keep your monitor about two feet away from you and six inches. below eye level, and be sure it’s directly in front of yon to minimize eye movement. Adjust lighting to, remove any glare or reflections. You can also adjust the brightness on your monitor to ease eyestrain. Even simple steps can help, like looking away from your monitor every 20 or 30 minutes and focusing on something farther away. And you can always use eyedrops to perk up your peepers! ({B)}Earbud-related Hearing Loss({/B)} Earbuds are the headphones used with many digital music players. They fit inside the ear but don’t cancel out background noise, requiring users to turn up the volume, often to 110 to 120 decibels--loud enough to cause hearing loss after only an hour end 15 minutes. And today, people spend much more time listening to their portable players, exposing themselves to damaging noise for longer periods of time. As a result, young people are developing the type of heating loss normally seen in much older adults. Experts recommend turning down the volume and limiting die amount of time spent listening to music players to about an hour a day. Headphones that fit outside the ear canal also help, as can noise-canceling headphones that reduce background noise so listeners don’t have to crank up the volume.({B)}E-thrombosis({/B)} This condition is related to deep vein thrombosis(血栓症), where blood clots form in deep veins, such as those in the legs. These clots can be fatal if they migrate to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Clots can form when blood supply slows or stops, such as in a period of prolonged immobility. Similarly, e-thrombosis is the development of clots in the deep veins of someone who spends long amounts of time in front of a computer without moving. Although only a handful of e-thrombosis cases have been reported, millions of people who spend most of their time in front of a computer are at risk. Avoiding e-thrombosis is simple: stand up and move around every hour, tap your toes while you work, put equipment end supplies in different parts of your work area so you have to move to get them, don’t cross your legs while sitting at your desk, don’t spend your lunch break at your desk (go for a quick walk instead), and don’t get too comfortable --if your workspace is ultra-cozy, you won’t want to get up.({B)}Generalized Anxiety Disorder({/B)} We all have worries, uncertainties, and fears, but generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is excessive or unrealistic unease or concern about life’s problems. Although the disorder often manifests without any specific cause, large issues of modern life (such as terrorism, the economy, and crime) can bring it about, as can individual circumstances like dealing with an illness. GAD affects about 6.8 million people in the United States, and symptoms include restlessness, fatigue, irritability, impatience, difficulty concentrating, headaches, upset stomach, and shortness of breath. Anxiety disorders like GAD are treated with antianxiety drugs, antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of these.({B)}Orthorexia Nervosa({/B)} It seems like every day there’s a new report about something you shouldn’t eat. The constant bombardment of information about food end health can confuse anyone, but for people who have the eating disorder orthorexia nervusa, it can be downright dangerous. People with this condition are, obsessed with eating healthful food and have constructed strict diets that they follow religiously. Although many people who have orthorexia nervosa become underweight, thinness is not their goal--nutritional purity is. Among the signs of orth0rexia nervosa are spending more than three hours a day thinking about healthful food; planning meals days in advance; feeling virtuous from following a strict healthful diet, but not enjoying eating; feeling socially isolated (such strict diets make it bard to eat anywhere but at home); and feeling highly, critical of those who do not follow a similar diet. Although the psychiatric community does not officially recognize orthorexia nervosa as a disorder, those with the condition benefit from psychological treatment and sessions with eating-disorder specialists.({B)}Sick Building Syndrome({/B)} Rising energy costs aren’t just harmful to your wallet; if you work in an office building, they could be making you physically ill. Businesses have found that by packing buildings with insulation then adding caulking and weather stripping,. they can seal buildings tight, keep indoor temperatures constant, and cut energy costs in the process. Such measures require the healing, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to work harder to recycle air. After all, when the building is sealed, you can’t open a window to let fresh air circulate. The result is sick building syndrome, which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies as a situation where building occupants experience discomforting health effects even though no specific cause can be found. Symptoms include headache; eye, nose, or throat irritation; dry cough; dry or itchy skin; dizziness; nausea; fatigue; and sensitivity to odors. The EPA estimates that 30 percent of all U.S. office buildings could be "sick," so they recommend routine maintenance of HVAC systems, including cleaning or replacing filters; replacing water-stained ceiling tiles and carpeting; restricting smoking in and around buildings; and ventilating areas where paints, adhesives, or solvents are used.({B)}Social Anxiety Disorder({/B)} Despite all the ways to interact with others in our technologically savvy world, those with social anxiety disorder feel boxed in by the shrinking globe. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), people with social anxiety disorder have an "intense, persistent, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of doing things that will embarrass them," and that fear can be so intense that it interferes with work, school, and other ordinary activities end can make it hard to make and keep friends. But the condition has physical manifestations, too, including trembling, upset stomach, heart palpitations, confusion, and diarrhea. The cause hasn’t been nailed down, but social anxiety disorder is probably due to a combination of environmental and hereditary factors. About 15 million people in the United States are affected by social anxiety disorder, winch .usually begins during childhood. Like other anxiety disorders, treatment often involves medication and psychotherapy. Why the constant bombardment of information about food is bad for people who have the eating disorder orthorexia nervosa A.Because they will follow the information seriously.B.Because they will aim to become thinner.C.Because they won’t make suitable plans.D.Because they won’t enjoy eating.

“Hi there. How's it going?” “Oh, fine. Fine. How about this weather, huh?” “Well, I guess we can always use the rain.” What's that? This story? Oh, just a little look at small talk. You know, those seemingly meaningless conversations you have dozens of times a day. Maybe you're waiting for the elevator. Or in a line at the bank. It all seems pretty trivial. Idle chatter about traffic doesn' t do much more than fill the air with empty words that are quickly forgotten. But you should know that small talk actually has a big place in our lives. Pat Oliver, assistant professor on arts, says that, “Left unchecked, small talk can be an invasion. It's so powerful. It does something to you.” “Every morning after spending an hour and a half on the freeway I start the day with small talk with my secretary,” Oliver says, “If I don't make small connection with another person, I can' t work.”What causes it? As a rule, you're either trying to force something into your life, or you're using conversation as an invisible force field to keep them out. You can be wanting to connect with another person, and small talk is your introduction to more meaningful conversation. The way people use small talk is usually determined by where they happen to be at the time. Take the elevator, for instance. Now there's prime territory. Nobody knows anyone and there's no reason to start a conversation, but invariably, someone does. Making conversation in such peaceful social settings, according to Oliver, “can confirm your territory. It's a way of feeling liked and accepted.” The topics of small talk don't matter. In fact, you don't want anything more taxing than the weather or the traffic. It's non-threatening talk in a threatening situation. However, the rules change quickly when you're with lots of people doing lots of talking. Let's say you're at a party. Now it' s time to use small talk as a way of making others feel more comfortable around you, so you don' t look silly standing by the food table alone all night.1.“Small talk”, as interpreted by the author, _____.A.has no real function in communication at allB.is usually meaningless and therefore uselessC.is not as idle as it may seem to beD.is restricted to certain topics only2.According to the author, small talk is often used _____.A.to invade other' s private affairsB.to share a secret between intimate friendsC.to open and maintain channels of communicationD.to protect one' s own privacy3.According to the author, topics of small talk may include comments on _____.A.some political issuesB.one' s physical conditionC.other' s ways of dressD.the traffic jam 4.Why is small talk described as “non-threatening talk in a threatening situation”?A.It is used by people to encourage those who are confronted with danger.B.It is used to show that one is enthusiastic and hospitable.C.It is used to create a more friendly atmosphere and to avoid embarrassment.D.It is used by people to protect others in the threatening situation.5.According to the author, at a big party, small talk is used with the purpose of _____.A.making both others and yourself feel at easeB.excluding those you don't like from joining youC.keeping your voice low so only your friends can hear forting those who feel lonely

Five-year-old Elia arrived at school with a big box of colored pencils. Her friend, Anna, offered to exchange her set of markers for the brand-new pencils. Elia agreed, but soon discovered that the markers were dried up. "Thatˈs not fair!" cried Elia to her teacher. “I want my new pencils back.” After some tears and negotiation, the teacher helped the girls set things right by returning the items to their original owners. Later that day, at story time, the teacher shared the picture book classic A Bargain for Frances. Though the conflict in the story is just over a broken tea set, the message about fair play was not lost on the children. The book was helpful in exploring a small, yet significant, life lesson. Stories are vital to the way we process and experience life events and the feelings that surround us. The ability to create, share, and respond to stories is one of the vital characteristics of being human. In fact, the human brain is programmed to see patterns and become fascinated in the plot development of stories, finally storing them in long-term memory. As a result, the brain is a remarkably effective processor of stories, both real and fictional. High-quality picture books are a good blend of art and literature that attracts kidsˈ imagination and communicates an idea in an effective way. These books me perfect teaching tools, as they deal with the powerful emotions that kids feel, model effective coping strategies, and present complex concepts in appropriate ways. In addition, according to brain research, the picture book combines words with what leaves the most permanent impression: images. The pictures in books are different from the images kids see on television in that they remain on the page, ready to be revisited, touched, and commented upon. • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
